No, most people learn martial arts to defend and protect themselves from attack. That is the same purpose for me writing this book. To protect you. Some of the things I will recommend in this book may not feel right. Some may come across as underhanded or over the top. Let me assure you from years of experience fighting womenâs corners they are not but at the same time, my intention is to make sure that you come out on top or at the very least, are not taken advantage of by your ex or by the system. Through my many years of experience dealing with difficult, complex cases, I want to turn decades of experience into days or weeks for you by bringing you the most relevant and helpful guidance. About ZackI am a divorcee myself but must confess that my divorce was a relatively straight forward matter, costing very little financially because it was mutually agreed. My ex-wife was a decent person and when it became clear our marriage had run its course, we ended it relatively quickly and without too much drama. The result was a clean break with little or no mud-slinging, allowing everyone to move on with their lives. Good people donât always get along but that is nothing to be ashamed of. Itâs life.In 2012, I came to the aid of a woman going through a particularly difficult and testy divorce the reasons for which made no sense to me. There were many complications including children, a business, debt, large sums of money and assets as well as a reluctant spouse who did not want to divorce though he had no problem quite publicly splitting his time with numerous other women. I spent the next eight years helping this woman through what was a nightmare process that could easily have gone wrong on many occasions and could have cost her several times the legal fees she ended up paying. That along with the fact that I have been successfully representing myself and many companies in court since I was 18 (Iâm aged 48 at the time of writing) meant word about me quickly spread and other people, all women, came to me for help because they did not fully understand the legal system or their lawyers. So, I ended up helping hundreds of people though the Circuit and High courts of Ireland and the UK. Please note I have no legal training and everything I know is self taught through experience, which is probably my secret success weapon.Why this matters to you?Despite all the progress we have made in recent years, women still remain very much on the back foot compared to their male counterparts. So it is my wish that they obtain as much knowledge, wisdom and tools from my experiences, mistakes and lessons so that they can be spared the much of the unnecessary pain, confusion, grief and financial burden that can come with divorce. The law assumes you are rational and sane but before and during divorce, your emotions will be like a roller-coaster which will affect your ability to make rational decisions â decisions that could affect the rest of your life. Wherever you are around the world divorce will feel awful. You may lose your home. You may lose money. You may lose friends. It will be hugely stressful. But there are things that can be done to ease its passage.As I write this book in early 2020 the #MeToo movement involving a famous Hollywood film producer was a game changer as it brought to the attention of the world the injustices being inflicted on women. News coverage from other parts of the world shows that this problem is not restricted to the glamorous world of Hollywood, nor does it discriminate (ironically) on the basis of race, creed or colour. For too long, women have been at a disadvantaged from birth, in some cases being murdered as new bornâs because â in some cultures - they would never be able to match the earning power of their male counterparts and are deemed too expensive. Sexual harassment is still rife and carries with it a sense of shame and stigma as does domestic abuse which continues to exist in most societies. In certain parts of the Middle East, women are only recently being granted the right to drive. In the Western world, women still commonly surrender their family name on marriage to their husband and are often on the short straw when it comes to wills or inheritance matters â the result being that women are told indirectly from day one that they are second class citizens not worthy of the same rights as their male counterparts.The pillars we were told we could depend on â the traditional family unit, our religious institutions, legal systems and protections - have all proved to be at best ignorant and at worst complicit in the mistreatment of women.Divorce still carries with it a stigma and sense of shame that somehow this is a massive failure. The reality in the majority of cases however is that two well-intentioned people tried to make something work and it has not worked out or has simply run its course. Good people donât always get along. That is not a crime and you mustnât try to see it as such. Divorce is here to stay so we have to get better at dealing with it. In my opinion, Divorce is leadership. Making the difficult decision to Divorce demonstrates decision making under extreme pressure. If you approach Divorce with the mindset of a responsible leader rather than a powerless, emotional victim, that will lead to better outcomes for you, meaning you can move on with your life sooner and hopefully save yourself legal fees along the way. Let me be clear that this is book is not an anti-man and I am by no means anti-man or anti-male, which is important since I am a man myself. My quest is to recognise women for all they have been through, all they contribute to this world and to be treated, at least as equals, worthy of respect, dignity and opportunity in all spheres of life. Divorce for a woman, can feel like the end as so much of your identity can be invested in your marriage and family. Let this book be your guide, gently holding your hand and reassuring all women that whilst divorce is the close of an important chapter in your life, it is also an opportunity for you to carve out a new, exciting life for yourself. Take back control. You get to write the next chapter. You can make your way to a better, more optimistic future. I have seen living proof of that and if my knowledge and tools can help you move to a better place, I would consider that a life saved.Some of my tips will seem obvious. Some may feel a little over-the-top. But they are designed to make your life easier and if an easier Divorce is your objective, follow these and you wonât go far wrong. Plan and prepare for the worst and hope for the best by taking proactive, preemptive action to protect your position. Build Divorce muscle. I have found that those who approach these situations from a position of strength emerge from the process quicker and recover quicker as well. Use the book as a plan.
